Question: If I use rubber elastic in a swimsuit what needle should I use? I assume the rubber will not glide easily so what should I do to help it along?
Answer: That is an excellent question!
I use the same ballpoint needle on the elastic that I use for sewing and serging the swimsuit. The rubber elastic has a powdery coating on it to make the needle glide easily and to keep it from sticking to itself. I have sewn thousands of swimsuits and leotards and I have never had a problem with the needle sticking even at the high speeds of industrial sewing machines.
It makes a big difference if you always sew with the elastic on the bed of the machine and the fabric on top. The feed dogs push the elastic through more evenly and the fabric glides right through.
